Google has acquired Bitspin, a Swiss application developer responsible for the Android alarm clock app Timely.
In an announcement on Bitspin's website, the Zurich-based company said:
"We're thrilled to announce that Bitspin is joining Google, where we'll continue to do what we love: building great products that are delightful to use.
For new and existing users, Timely will continue to work as it always has. Thanks to everyone who has downloaded our app and provided feedback along
the way; we truly appreciate all your support."
Google later confirmed the acquisition -- but declined to reveal how much the search engine paid or the terms of the deal. However, users of the Android
application at least can reap the benefits, as the once-premium app is now available for free in the Google Play store.
Timely is an Android alarm clock that can be customised in a number of ways, including altering the interface, color themes, sound options, and challenges to
make sure you wake up in the morning. Instead of simply flipping your phone to quieten the alarm, for example, you could make yourself complete a math challenge
before the alarm clock stops.
According to the Bitspin website, the small team of developers behind the project come from ETH (Eidgenoessische Technische Hochschule) Zurich, and includes
two former Google+ interns.
The acquisition of Bitspin follows a number of deals secured by the tech giant last year, including the purchase of Israel-based mapping startup Waze in June.
